12 Mar WATER-MINING | Kaumera | Finding Value in Urban Wastewater
The versatile Kaumera Nereda? gum is a new bio-based raw material that can be extracted through Nereda? urban water treatment process, adding value, circularity and sustainability to the chain.
A development from the Dutch water sector, there is now a mobile Kaumera facility operating at the Faro-Olhao urban wastewater treatment in southern Portugal as part of the EU-funded WATER-MINING project?s Case Study 3.
Kaumera, which is extracted from sludge, boasts a range of potential applications. It can serve as a binder in composite materials, give materials flame retardant qualities, and can be used as a biostimulant and coating in agriculture, reducing the need for irrigation. A first commercial contract has been made for its use in agriculture. It also has potential use in the textile industry, construction and much more.
